Advanced Theatre is designed to build on the fundamentals of Beginning and Intermediate Theatre Arts classes; to share a common vocabulary of acting/directing terminology and concepts; to develop an experimental understanding of scene study; to gain an understanding of the development of technique by studying various approaches taken by teachers throughout theatre history; to exhibit growth as an artist by developing self-awareness and a sense of professional responsibility to self and others.
Class Content and Methods:
This class is for the student committed to pursue the craft of acting professionally. Students will use writing, critique, in-class and out of class rehearsals and performances to develop and apply their skills. In-class discussions, reading assignments, group exercises and improvisations will be used to supplement scene work and aid in the understanding and application of practical acting/directing techniques.
Focus will be placed on play productions! Memorization is a requirement; therefore work at home will have to be done.
Students are required to attend all rehearsals.
Most after school rehearsals will be on an “at need basis”. The harder they work in class and at home, the less rehearsals we have after school.
Grading Policy Theatre Arts:
Warm-Ups will be 20% of your final grade.
Line Memorization will be 20% of your final grade.
Assignments will be 20% of your final grade.
Rehearsals will be 20% of your final grade.
Performances will be 20% of your final grade.
As you can see, students are graded on various ways of expression, memorization, etc. I like to see strong body language, good enunciation, projection, and delivery of lines. You will pass by using all in-class time to rehearse, staying on task and not sidetracking others, and improving on your performances. I’m a firm believer that it’s not the destination that’s important but the journey in this class. How students use their class time is essential to the process and vital to the success of the production.
